For the start of the new semester of art class I thought we would learn some color theory. We started with an M&M quiz..questions about the primary and secondary colors..the answers were in the M&Ms snack. Then we painted color triangles..and experimented with some Kandinsky concentric circles.

Chanukah Crafts

This past month at our school Chanukah Party I provided some crafts for the kids to make. I had a hard time finding good Chanukah Crafts online so I came up with one that was a big hit and thought I would share it. We made Maccabee Shields using gold cake rounds that I bought from a bakery supply store . The kids used either colored tape or glitter glue and glitter to decorate the front of the shield. For the handle on the back we used duct tape. The kids loved them.!
We also made menorah candle hats, a chanukah standard, from construction paper and gold glitter..glued and stapled together. Here I lined the kids up for a human Menorah..!
Happy Chanukah!

Interview on Drawing
I recently was interviewed by a wonderful blog called The Hamster Wheel about drawing..
The blog posts interviews with different artists twice a month..focusing on their ideas about drawing, their process and what gets their own "hamster wheel" turning!
You can see my interview with The Hamster Wheel here...

Birthday Parties
Its Birthday Party season at our house and I just made two wonderful parties (if I may say so myself!) The first one, for my daughter, was a SNOW party! All white decorations, white balloons, and white cake with marshmallows on top. I bought a bunch of white tuile to cover the furniture. We drank hot chocolate and played Snow-themed games that I adapted from games I read about online. The biggest hits were "Frozen Hot Potato" where you fill a balloon with water and put it in the freezer until its a frozen ball..then you play the traditional Hot Potato game..lots of giggling and frozen hands! The other big hit was "Shoveling Snow"I dumped a very large bag of cotton balls on the floor..then two teams had to race to shovel the "snow" to their own area on the other side of the room using only their noses! Hilarious!
Birthday Party #2 was a Hockey-themed party. I made this fabulous indoor hockey rink using 60" wide drawing paper taped to the floor with gaffers tape. Then the lines on the ice were just red and blue gaffers tape. We used inflatable hockey sticks that I purchased here... and the puck I made by covering a round plastic container with black tape. We had three minute games..three a side..the winning team going on to the next round. Everyone won a little plastic trophy at the end..then the whole party deteriorated into whacking each other over the heads with the inflatable hockey sticks..just like a real NHL game!

After School Puppet Project

This week in my after school art class we painted our puppet heads that we had made last week from plaster gauze. This is very much like paper mache but it dries so much faster and is hard as rock. After we painted them with acrylic paint we added these colorful dresses and a felt collar...and voila! we were ready for our puppet show!
